    @Remember_Sarah Also, historically narrative itself skews female in its readership, and true-crime has always been the most female-skewing of crime genre readerships, even when sexual violence and gender issues aren't foregrounded. Sorry, no citation handy, but it's the consensus of historians

      @Remember_Sarah sorry, i meant narrative *fiction*. there is a TON of gender- and sexual-violence-focused scholarship on the crime genres, to be blunt, it's the lion's share of interesting theory about crime fiction. one core argument of my diss was that crime fiction is melodramatic, not tragic

        @Remember_Sarah Indeed, the lion's share of fiction consumed in any given time period has been melodramatic (which skews popular, not necessarily female-marketed, despite longstanding US bias to the contrary), and true-crime more than other crime genres. </diss-rant>
